Home Preparation for Hurricanes

Home Preparation for Hurricanes

The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins in June of each year and ends November 30th. An essential part of your hurricane preparedness is making sure your home and garden have been assessed and that you have adequate knowldege on things to do for your home if a storm were to hit. In this article, we have created a checklist of the main areas of your home that require regular maintenance checks during the hurricane season.

See more at the end of the article on getting in touch, to schedule a visit with 5 Star.

Roof Inspection:

Roof insprections are vital during this season. The inspection involves assessing the roof for any tiles that are loose or not properly secured and/or any damaged shingles.

Fixing any current problem areas in the roof can help avoid water leakage during heavy rainfall.

Windows and Doors:

This involves evaluating the current state and durability of windows and doors, completing any repairs needed and additional reinforcing if required.

In addition to these routine checks, we also recommend you install hurricane shutters or have plywood and materials to board your windows up if needed.

Gutters and Drainage:

Even isolated thunderstorms can cause some leaves or small debris from trees to fall into gutters and cover drainage pipes.

Regular cleaning and clearing out of gutters, drainage systems and downspouts are important so that if a storm or hurricane were to come, the gutters and drains are fully cleared enabling proper water flow to be maintained as much as possible.

Secure Outdoor Items:

Storm force winds can be very powerful leading outdoor furniture and other objects being swept away. Proper fastening and tying down of outdoor/backyard furniture is vital.

For smaller and lighter items that can be easily moved, these can be placed inside, in a storage unit or a shed. Therefore leaving additional room in these spaces is important to ensure outdoor furniture can be easily placed inside in an event of a storm.

Tree and Shrub Trimming:

Storm force winds can also cause leaves, branches and small shrubs to be swept away, posing a risk nearby house and car windows and more. Regular landscaping and lawncare, including pruning trees and shrubs especially those with overhanging branches, can lessen the risk of these flying through the air when powerful winds come.

Garage Doors:

Similar to the point above, if you have any concerns/issues about your garage door, scheduling an assessment to look at its durability is important (before the hurricane season begins if possible).

Sandbags are also things to ensure that you pick up when prepping for a storm as it acts as another meaure to help prevent water from getting under the garage door.

Renovation & Extension of Commercial Unit at Strand

Renovation & Extension of Commercial Unit at Strand

Type: Commercial Renovation & Extension

Scale: 2,939 sqft

Location: Seven Mile Beach

We were engaged to renovate an older and out-dated second floor unit at the Strand, including advising on potential options, style and materials in order to achieve a highly professional and modern finish but within tight financial boundaries to achieve cost-effectiveness and thus to ensure a successful commercial property.

In addition to the general fit out, which included new toilet facilities and installation of better kitchen facilities, without sacrificing usable space, we advised that a further floor was possible. Planning permission was obtained and we installed a new floor, increasing the available floor area from around 1,750 sqft to nearly 3,000 sqft, significantly increasing the value of the commercial property.
The property was configured to allow for sub-letting of the new upper floor by way of a staircase and lockable door off the entrance lobby, providing increased flexibility of tenancies possible. Additionally, we ensured that services such as AC were configured to allow for the differences between what was now a roof-space and a mid-floor. All works were completed on time and to latest code, duly inspected and passed.
We love this type of fit out as it provides us with the opportunity to demonstrate just what can be achieved with a space without spending huge sums. In this case, the owner has benefited from a significant increase in planning-approved floor area and a thoroughly upscale, modern, light and inviting space, which is now fully let by a single, prestigious client demanding the highest standards.

Integra Healthcare

Integra Healthcare

Previously these were offices in Grand Pavilion but Integra wanted to create a first class medical facility that was the smartest around and made exceptional use of space. Working with a space planner, we literally stripped out the space back to concrete shell and re-built what is now one of Cayman’s finest healthcare clinics. From initial strip out to the final lick of paint, we managed virtually everything, whilst working closely with the building’s in-house AC and electrical team. Integra now has smart new premises on a great floor plan, whilst achieving a fit out cost that we believe very few can match.

We didn’t do the signs but it seems like a nice place to start!

The walls were completely renewed and needed to be painted with a hospital-grade paint to ensure the best standards in infection control. We completely replaced the suspended ceiling, working with fire control contractors to ensure the space was to code.

The floor plan was inch-perfect to ensure the absolute best use of space, ensuring that Integra could incorporate things like a refreshment station and a children’s play area (out of shot).

Integra wanted a modern, clean finish and so we used doors that we could stain in a walnut finish, which allowed for the exact right tone whilst also keeping costs sensible.

We used a variety of door types to maximise space – regular ones for consulting rooms, bespoke shapes e.g. for the IT cupboard, and pocket doors where we didn’t want to encroach on the floor space.

One of the Paediatric consulting rooms at Integra. They are light, inviting and very clean in their feel.

The Statue Garden

The Statue Garden

We’re very proud of the work we did, under the guidance of a great designer, to help realise this client’s vision for a wonderful garden, filled with places to just be, relax with friends, entertain and more. The value it adds to the property is just a bonus.

We built pretty much everything except parts of the water features. A beautiful space for relaxing meals.

The garden runs down to the dockside, creating a seamless transition from garden to boating.

This pergola is for relaxing evenings as the light subsides. Another beautiful space.

There are feature walls, walk-throughs and paths throughout the garden and even an amphitheatre.
